What makes Doghammer’s summer barefoot shoes stand out?
Our summer barefoot shoes for men and women are characterised by a particularly soft and flexible sole. The barefoot shoe sole, made from 85% natural rubber, is manufactured directly in Portugal. Thanks to the sole, walking in our summer barefoot shoes comes very close to the ‘real’ barefoot walking experience! We also follow the zero-drop approach with our barefoot shoes for the warm summer months. In addition, we use a wide and comfortable toe box that offers your feet and toes plenty of space. When selecting materials for our summer barefoot shoes, we opt for a knit made from cooling wool or recycled textiles.
Where are the summer barefoot shoes made?
Like all Doghammer shoes, our summer barefoot shoes are handcrafted in a family-run shoe factory in Portugal. The factory is located about an hour’s drive inland from Porto. We have been working with them since 2019 and are constantly developing our sustainable shoes further. As a result, the majority of our suppliers for our summer barefoot shoes are based in this region, and we benefit from low CO₂ emissions thanks to short transport routes. The soles for our summer barefoot shoes, for example, come from our sole manufacturer, who produces just 50 km away.
What materials are the summer barefoot shoes made of?
We use a variety of materials for our summer barefoot shoes. For example, there is a summer barefoot shoe made from a recycled textile blend; in this version, we have omitted the inner lining, which makes the shoe even more breathable and lightweight. A particularly comfortable and equally breathable material is the knitted summer barefoot shoe made from genuine wool. The knitted upper makes the shoe breathable and allows your feet plenty of room to cool down. As well as these two materials, we also use genuine merino wool for our summer barefoot shoes. You can find out why merino wool is perfect for summer barefoot shoes a little further down this page.
Can I also wear the summer barefoot shoes during the transitional season?
Of course you can wear the summer barefoot shoes during the transitional seasons too. The wool barefoot shoes, in particular, are perfect for this change of season. You can also wear our textile barefoot shoes in spring and autumn; however, compared to the wool barefoot shoes, these do not adapt quite as well to the ambient temperature.
Why is wool perfect for summer barefoot shoes?
It’s quite simple: wool is one of the few natural materials that adapts so well to temperature differences. Just think of a sheep: it stands in the pasture come rain or shine – whether it’s warm or cold, wet or dry. And have you ever seen a sheep sweating or shivering? No, because the wool adapts perfectly to the external environment. The same applies to your summer barefoot shoes made of wool. In very warm temperatures, the wool has a cooling effect, whilst in warmer temperatures it keeps you warm. For our summer barefoot shoes, we use mulesing-free merino wool. Merino sheep are mainly found in southern countries and their wool fibres are significantly softer and finer, which is why they’re even better suited to summer barefoot shoes.
